Black Soldier Fly Pre-feasibility Study

Assignment

An established Black Soldier Fly producer in Kenya wanted to investigate the possibility for expansion to selected African markets.

Context

BSF farming is presently the most widespread form of insect farming in the world. The Black Soldier Fly is ideally suited for food production due to its rapid production cycle and high concentration of protein. The high percentage of protein in the larvae makes them an ideal source of food for a wide variety of animals.

Challenge

A leading BSF producer wanted to assess the possibility of replicating its Kenyan business model to Zambia and needed to understand (a) quantum and composition of available biological waste (as feedstock for BSF production) and (b) the competitive landscape for protein sources as a key ingredient for producing animal feed.

Solution

A feasibility study was carried out in Zambia, mapping amongst others biological waste generated by breweries (spent grain), poultry farms and slaughterhouses. An analysis was made how BSF-based protein could substitute other solutions presently used as inputs for feed in the livestock and aquaculture sectors.
