Post Harvest Loss training (Dairy)

Assignment

Inefficient dairy infrastructure causes spoilage and low yields, hindering sector development. The solution involves training farmers to better utilize their resources at hand.

Context

Dairy farming is crucial for ensuring food security, economic development, and nutritional well-being by providing a sustainable source of milk and related products; notably. It constitutes 12% of Kenya's agricultural GDP, making up 4% of Kenya's national GDP, playing a significant role in the country's economy.

Challenge

Inefficient cooling, storage, and processing infrastructure hinder African dairy, leading to substantial milk spoilage. In addition, African milk yields are low – partly because of limited know how. Together this translates to lost revenue for farmers, heightened food insecurity, and hinders commercial and nutritional development. Investing in robust cold chains and processing facilities is crucial for unlocking the sector's potential.

Solution

Working through four different dairy processors, almost 200 farmers were trained together with Perfometer and ABSA Kenya key staff. This offered a great chance for partners to connect and lay the groundwork for future collaboration. ABSA took advantage of the workshop by presenting its products directly to processors and farmers. Farmers particularly liked the practical sessions and on-farm tours, finding inspiration in modern dairy farming techniques to improve their own operations sustainably.
