Post Harvest Loss (Horticulture)
Assignment
Context
Estimates of horticultural losses in Kenya have been reported to be as high as 50 percent, mainly due to poor storage and handling practices
Challenge
Reducing fruit and vegetable losses in Kenya requires better infrastructure, farming methods, and technology adoption, alongside efforts to enhance storage, transportation, handling practices, and pest control measures. These initiatives aim to bolster food security, promote economic stability, and support sustainable agricultural development.
Solution
Together with FPC and ABSA Bank Kenya key staff, a series of 8 workshops were organized throughout Kenya. Farmers were introduced to post-harvest losses and their causes, emphasizing the importance of addressing them. Policies and institutional frameworks were discussed, along with the roles of value chain actors. Technologies like value addition techniques and processing equipment were introduced. Benefits of reducing post-harvest losses included increased marketable volume, improved pricing, extended shelf life, enhanced sales opportunities, and better waste management. The aim was to outline various strategies for mitigating post-harvest losses and increase overall yields and farmer income. Participants were taken through a range of financing structures.
